About PhonePe
PhonePe was created with the aim of making digital payments simple, secure and widely accepted in India. The company launched its app shortly after the introduction of the Unified Payments Interface, commonly known as UPI.
The app allows users to send and receive money directly through their bank accounts. It can also be used for mobile recharges, utility-bill payments, FASTag recharges, insurance purchases and payments at online or offline stores.
PhonePe has developed a large merchant network across cities, towns and rural areas. Shopkeepers can accept payments using PhonePe QR codes and receive instant payment confirmations through SmartSpeakers. This has helped small businesses adopt digital payments without needing expensive card machines.
The company has also expanded beyond payments. Share.Market offers stockbroking and mutual-fund distribution, while Indus Appstore provides an alternative Android app marketplace. Pincode now focuses on business solutions for offline merchants. In April 2026, PhonePe announced that it had crossed 700 million registered users.
Who Owns PhonePe?
Walmart Inc., an American multinational retail company, is the majority shareholder of PhonePe. Other investors and employees also hold shares in the company.
PhonePe was acquired by Flipkart in 2016, when it was still in the early stages of development. Walmart later became its indirect majority owner after purchasing a controlling stake in Flipkart in 2018.
In December 2022, PhonePe completed its separation from Flipkart. The two businesses became independent entities, although Walmart remained the majority shareholder of both groups. PhonePe is therefore no longer a subsidiary of Flipkart.
Sameer Nigam continues to serve as PhonePe’s founder and chief executive officer. Rahul Chari is the founder and chief technology officer, while Burzin Engineer is the founder and chief reliability officer.
Foreign majority ownership does not automatically make PhonePe an American company. Its corporate origin, headquarters, legal registration and main operating market remain in India.
Is PhonePe Registered in India?
Yes, PhonePe Limited is incorporated and registered in India under the Companies Act. Its registered and corporate office is located at Salarpuria Softzone in Bellandur, Bengaluru.
PhonePe had previously used a Singapore-based holding structure. In 2022, the company moved its business entities, subsidiaries and employee stock-option plan from Singapore to India. It also transferred the ownership of businesses such as its insurance, wealth and IndusOS operations to the Indian entity.
Following this restructuring, all PhonePe Group businesses were consolidated under PhonePe India. The company became fully Indian-domiciled before completing its separation from Flipkart. PhonePe’s official announcement confirms this corporate move.
Why Is PhonePe Considered an Indian Company?
PhonePe is considered Indian because it was founded by Indian entrepreneurs in Bengaluru, developed primarily for Indian consumers and operates from an Indian headquarters. Its employees, users, merchants and main business activities are concentrated in India.
The company also builds products around Indian financial systems such as UPI and Bharat BillPay. Its return of legal domicile from Singapore to India further strengthened its formal Indian identity.
PhonePe can therefore be described as a Walmart-owned Indian financial-technology company. Its international investment provides financial support and global backing, while its origin, operational identity and legal base remain firmly Indian.
